Lansing: a contemporary exterior in dark siding

This home’s original brown wood siding had weathered over time. Our renovation combined James Hardie siding with Nichiha accents, using dark horizontal lines and a contrasting entry area to complement the existing architecture.

  • Location: Lansing, MI
  • Materials: James Hardie and Nichiha

The finished exterior is a combination of products. We identify both manufacturers here so you can discuss a similar design with an accurate material list.

Mason: blue siding with stone accents

For this Mason home, the exterior update paired blue James Hardie fiber cement siding with white trim and Versetta Stone accents. The photos show the change around the entrance and front wall.

  • Location: Mason, MI
  • Materials: James Hardie and Versetta Stone

What to specify before installation

  • Wall preparation: Define the old siding removal, inspection and how concealed damage will be priced and approved.
  • Water-management details: Include the weather barrier, flashing and transitions around windows, doors, roof intersections and adjacent materials.
  • Product-specific installation: Identify the chosen siding, trim, fasteners and applicable manufacturer instructions in the project documentation.
  • Finish and detailing: Agree on the color, board layout, trim widths and treatment of material transitions.
  • Project handoff: Review completed work, cleanup, care information and the warranty documents for the actual installed products.

Understand care and warranty coverage

James Hardie currently describes a 30-year, non-prorated, transferable substrate limited warranty for its siding, trim and soffit products, and a separate 15-year limited warranty for ColorPlus finishes. Coverage is subject to the applicable terms; warranty length does not establish the service life of your installation.

Review the manufacturer’s warranty overview and obtain the documents for your selected products. Ask separately about the installation workmanship warranty included in your proposal.

Ongoing care: Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning guidance. Its recommendations include a low-pressure hose and a soft, nonmetal brush as needed; aggressive pressure washing can damage the surface. See James Hardie’s siding cleaning guidance.

James Hardie siding questions

How much does James Hardie siding installation cost?

Price depends on the measured siding area, height and access, product and finish, trim details, removal work and concealed repairs. Ask for a complete installed estimate. Our siding comparison explains how to compare equivalent scopes.

Is Hardie board the same as fiber cement siding?

“Hardie board” is commonly used for James Hardie products. Fiber cement describes the broader material category. Specify the manufacturer, exact product and finish when comparing estimates so you know what is included.

Does board and batten describe a material?

Board and batten describes an exterior appearance, not one specific material. Ask which panel and batten products will create the look, and how that assembly will be installed on your home.

Can I combine James Hardie siding with stone or other accents?

Yes. The Mason project above combines James Hardie with Versetta Stone; the Lansing project combines James Hardie and Nichiha. Each design needs a defined material list and planned transitions.

Should I choose James Hardie or vinyl?

That depends on your design, maintenance preferences and project budget. Compare this page with our vinyl siding projects and options and request a proposal for the products you are considering.
